Hello! I’m Nero!

This article is a translation of a past Japanese post based on a stay in July 2023. Please note that the services mentioned may have changed or been discontinued since then. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently took my very first trip to Hakone! I stayed at an amazing ryokan that has it all—from an incredible buffet to private hot springs! ✨

Here is the ryokan we stayed at!

 ↓↓↓

I’m excited to introduce Hakone Yumoto Onsen Tenseien, a wonderful hot spring resort located in Hakone Yumoto, Kanagawa.

Within walking distance from Hakone-Yumoto Station!

箱根湯本駅

It takes about 12 minutes to walk to Tenseien from the station.

Although there is a hotel shuttle bus available for a small fee (100 yen one way), I decided to walk this time because I wanted to enjoy the charming streets of Hakone-Yumoto!

須雲川

It was a very hot day, but it felt amazing to walk while watching the rushing waters of the Sukumo River.

天成園

It looks so spacious just from the outside! We made it—we’ve finally arrived!

check in and head inside our room

Time to check in and head inside our room! (By the way, we had to wait in line for about 15 minutes to check in.)

天成園 お部屋

For this stay, we booked a “Western-style Twin Room (Type B, Non-smoking, No Bath)”. …Or so we thought, but it actually came with a bathtub! haha 😂

天成園 お部屋

⬆️ You can see the beautiful garden right from the room window.

天成園 お部屋

⬆️ Speaking of ryokans, you can’t forget the welcome sweets! The ‘Sakura Ebi no Mai’ (shrimp rice crackers) they provided were so good, and you can buy them at the souvenir shop on the 1st floor.

⬆️ Underneath the TV, you’ll find the safety deposit box and a mini-fridge.

⬆️ They even provided a sample of Propolinse mouthwash! 😍

⬆️ In the closet area next to the entrance door, there was a haori jacket (to wear over the yukata), tabi socks, and a small shoulder bag to use around the resort!

Refresh in the Garden: Exploring the Waterfalls, Shrine, and Footbath

庭園のご案内

The grounds are packed with so many highlights, including two beautiful waterfalls, Tamadare Shrine, and a relaxing footbath!

絵馬に記入

Before heading out for a stroll—and before visiting the shrine in the garden—I wrote my wish on an “ema” (a traditional wooden wishing plaque). It was actually included as a complimentary perk in our booking package!

Nero

If your plan doesn’t include one, don’t worry—you can also purchase ema plaques and omamori (lucky amulets) at the ryokan’s front desk.

Garden pond full of life

アヒル

The garden pond is full of carp and ducks.

餌のガチャガチャ
餌のガチャガチャ

There is a gacha machine for feed, so I bought some for 100 yen.

注意書き

⬆️ It’s written that feeding overweight carp or pigeons is not allowed. It’s a bit difficult.

天成園の鯉たち

Even though I fed them, the carp weren’t as ravenous as I expected, but they did eat properly.

アヒルの紹介

The ducks were so cute and soothing.

Tamadare Shrine

Next, let’s head over to Tamadare Shrine!

玉簾神社

There are actually quite a few stairs to climb. It was a bit difficult and a little scary to walk up in a yukata and geta (traditional wooden sandals).

玉簾神社

We made it to the top!I tossed in a coin offering and made my wish. (^^)

Going back down the stairs in a yukata was even scarier and quite a challenge! (;’∀’)

銭洗い

⬆️ After praying, I also did the zeni-arai (money-washing ritual). ( ´艸`)

I also made sure to hang up the ema plaque I wrote earlier!

⬆️ I even took a photo with the heart-shaped ema plaques.

Hien Waterfall

飛烟の滝

⬆️ Next up is Hien Waterfall!

The temperature that day was a scorching 35°C (95°F) or more, but the air around the waterfall felt amazingly crisp and cool!

Tamadare Waterfall

玉簾の滝

⬆️ And here is Tamadare Waterfall.
Just like the other one, it gets cooler and cooler the closer you get to the falls!

玉簾の足水

⬆️ Right next to the waterfall, I found the “Tamadare no Ashimizu” (Tamadare Foot Plunge).

cold water foot plunge instead of a hot footbath. I decided to dip my feet in, and oh my goodness, it was absolutely freezing! ( ゚Д゚)

Ten no Ashiyu (Heavenly Footbath)

After the cold foot plunge, it was time for a warm footbath at “Ten no Ashiyu” (Heavenly Footbath)!

Inside the garden, there’s actually a spot where you can enjoy tea while soaking your feet.

Unfortunately, it was already closed for the evening when we got there… However, the footbath itself was still open, so we decided to take a soak!

庭園内の自販機

⬆️ A sign mentioned that a towel is required to dry your feet, so I bought one from the vending machine located right behind it.

It felt absolutely amazing on my tired feet after walking all around the garden! ♨️

Private Onsen Experience Report! Relaxing in a Private Hot Spring

I booked one of the paid private baths at check-in! It usually costs 2,200 yen per hour, but thanks to a discount included in our booking package, we were able to use it for just 1,100 yen!

At our reserved time, we picked up the key at the front desk and headed straight to the bath!

⬆️ Here is what the room we booked, Family Bath Aoi,” looked like!

Nero

You can’t choose the specific type of bathtub, so it’s completely random.

Apparently, there are 12 different types of private baths in total!

⬆️ The vanity is fully stocked with tons of amenities—I’m so grateful for this!

ねろろろぐ。イラスト

We thoroughly enjoyed a peaceful, private hour all to ourselves and left feeling completely refreshed.

By the way, what is the large public bath like…?

Of course, I couldn’t take any photos inside the public bath area…

The Dinner Buffet is Mind-Blowing! All-You-Can-Eat Sushi, Beef Tongue, and Eel

We had our dinner buffet at the restaurant “Takimitei” on the 2nd floor. And let me tell you, it was soooo delicious!

寿司

Imagine an all-you-can-eat selection of sushi, including sujiko (salted salmon roe), salmon, and tuna…!

I even got to watch a female sushi chef press the sushi right in front of my eyes. ♪

牛タンステーキ

The juicy beef tongue steaks were also all-you-can-eat~♪

鰻とたまご
One dish was unagi served on top of tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet).

They also had dishes featuring unagi (eel)—maybe it was a seasonal special?

Nero

It’s amazing to have eel on an all-you-can-eat menu!

天ぷらやお味噌汁

On top of that, there were tempura, miso soup, and so much more.
While you can order premium items like abalone or spiny lobster for an extra fee, the standard buffet without any paid upgrades was already more than satisfying!

Highly Satisfying Breakfast: Custom Seafood Bowls & Amazing Sweets

朝食

Breakfast is also buffet-style!
There is a huge selection of fresh seafood, which is both luxurious and exciting.
You can even create your very own custom seafood bowl (kaisen-don)! ♪

いくらかけ放題
To my surprise, it’s unlimited all-you-can-eat salmon roe!

They also had Western-style sweet options like pancakes and French toast! And yes, you can add as much butter and whipped cream as you want!!!! You absolutely must try it!

Summary of Hakone Yumoto Onsen Tenseien’s Highlights

Here are my personal top favorite points from our stay:

1st Place: The dinner and breakfast buffets are absolutely delicious!

2nd Place: You can enjoy not just the large public baths, but private onsen rentals (for a fee) too!

3rd Place: Strolling through the beautiful garden with its waterfalls and shrine is so much fun!

What did you think?
Tenseien in Hakone Yumoto is so easy to access from Tokyo. We booked an overnight stay this time, but they also offer day-trip options!

Why not plan a visit to heal your mind and body? (^^)
